MO THE MERRIER!

Maloney Penalty Seals Liverpool Triumph!

Andrew Maloney of Liverpool CIT shoots home the decisive penalty.

AN AFTERNOON of thrills and spills ended in dramatic fashion at Van Hogendorp yesterday.

After a keenly-contested group stage, a penalty shoot-out brought a sensational final victory for veteran campaigners Liverpool CIT, with Ant Treacy’s men picking up the HBOS Trophy in their fourth year of entry.

For Ronnie Johnson and his again-impressive CIT Chester side, it was a cruel way to miss out on the main prize, especially since they had topped the group stage unbeaten.

However, when the dust has settled, all the teams should have good memories from the tournament.

Dundee Corporate enjoyed an excellent victory over the eventual winners while the first-timers from Lloyds Bridgend came within seconds of a final appearance on their Eurofives debut.

Winning manager Ant Treacy was predictably delighted:

"In our 4th year of trying, we finally came away with some silverwear!” beamed Ant.

“And that only complimented another great weekend in the Dam. We’re relishing the chance to defend the title in 2010.”

Bank of Scotland’s Karen Graham, who presented the trophy to the winners, was also impressed.

“The futsal was fantastic,” Karen commented, “and Amsterdam was the perfect setting for the event, ideal for a team-building trip.”

What may be the last HBOS Trophy under its present guise was certainly one to remember!
