Cup II: Notman’s Boys Thwart Bristol’s Double Bid ... EDINBURGH ROCK
And there was a twist in
the tale when Stephen Notman’s Team Edinburgh edged out favourites FS Bristol
after a gripping final. Bristol, the current HBOS futsal
champions, played their usual silky soccer to come through their group stage
unscathed, although they had to come from behind to defeat Chris Fogg’s lively
Halifax Intermediaries from Glasgow. Bowing out at this point were Conor
McBride’s spirited Halifax Retail
Programmes and guest side FSL Amsterdam who acquitted themselves well with a
new line-up. Group
B was a keenly-contested affair. There
were very respectable debut showings from Eddie Wallace’s BoS Corporate
London and Laurence Clark’s Clerical Medical Bristol. However it was EFS
Maastricht, with ace goalie Jethro Cornelissen in sparkling form, and Team
Edinburgh who progressed to the final phase, the Scots’ victory in the opening
match ultimately proving decisive for the top spot.
The final was an
absorbing affair. Goals from Mackenzie, Wilson and Floyd gave Edinburgh a 3-1
lead but Lee Roberts pulled one back for FS Bristol to spark a tense final
few minutes. With the clock ticking down, a sensational save from Edinburgh
‘keeper Jamie White denied Andy Procter’s men an equaliser and sealed an epic
victory for the young Scots. Roll on February ... when the HBOS teams return
to town! _________ LAST WEEK: 05 November 2007 RON TOP OF THE WORLD! Scintillating Super Cup Victory for
Johnson’s Men
The first-ever
series, at De Pijp Sporthal in Amsterdam’s picturesque Old South, produced a
memorable afternoon of exciting, entertaining competition. And there were goals
galore, some from the very top drawer. In Group A CIT Chester, superbly marshalled by Ronnie
Johnson, pipped local rivals Risk Chester to the top spot ahead of BOSCAF Thames
Valley and the plucky newcomers from Private Banking Birmingham.
The
final was always going to be a cracker between the two local rivals and so it
proved. In the end, a dazzling hat-trick from Darren Holmes and a superb solo effort from
Pete Catling clinched victory for CIT. On
a day when there really were no losers, Risk Chester claimed the bronze with
a play-off win over NE Midlands. _____________ |
